316L Stainless Steel Cathode

Advantages of Cathode Plate

Long service life- In the face of the erosion of various acid, alkali and salt solutions, the titanium cathode plate shows a strong corrosion resistance, which greatly extends the service life, reduces the frequency of replacement, and saves considerable maintenance costs for the enterprise.

Strong conductivity- It's excellent conductivity, not only reduce the energy consumption, but also improve the current efficiency, for the enterprise to improve the productivity effect.

Smooth surface- The titanium cathode plate with a smooth surface effectively reduces the defects of the cathode deposits, thus improving the quality of the final product.

Light weight- It's light weight, make the operation and transportation more convenient, further improve the production efficiency. Especially in the strong corrosive electrolyte, the performance advantages of titanium cathode plate are more prominent.

How It Cathode Plate Works

Preparation of the Electrochemical Cell

The cathode plate is installed within an electrolytic cell, often submerged in an electrolyte solution that contains the ions needed for the process.

Application of Electric Current

An external power source supplies electricity, creating a potential difference between the anode and cathode. The cathode becomes negatively charged.

Ion Attraction and Reduction

Positively charged ions in the electrolyte are attracted to the cathode plate. Upon reaching the surface, these ions gain electrons (reduction), transforming into neutral atoms or molecules.

Reaction Completion

The reduced species either deposit onto the cathode surface (e.g., metal plating) or participate in further chemical reactions, producing desired outputs like hydrogen gas or pure metals.

Product Collection and System Maintenance

The products are collected, and the cathode plate may require cleaning or replacement to maintain efficiency.

Uses of Stainless Steel Cathode Plate

Aluminum Production
In aluminum smelting, stainless steel cathode plates form the base of electrolytic cells. They enable the efficient transfer of electrons during the Hall-Héroult process, which is essential for aluminum extraction from alumina.

Copper Refining
Copper electrorefining uses stainless steel cathode plates as the negative electrode to recover pure copper from impure anodes. These plates help achieve high purity levels (99.99%) and reduce impurities.

Water Treatment & Desalination
Electrochemical water treatment employs stainless steel cathode plates to remove contaminants and salts. Their corrosion resistance ensures longevity in saline environments.

Chemical Manufacturing
In chemical synthesis, especially in chlor-alkali processes, stainless steel cathode plates facilitate the electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide.

Renewable Energy Storage
Emerging applications include using stainless steel cathode plates in electrochemical energy storage systems, such as flow batteries.

FAQ

Q: What is the use of cathode plate?

A: Refining copper, nickel, or other metals involves electrorefining, where cathode plates serve as the surface for depositing pure metal. This process ensures high purity levels essential for industrial applications.

Q: Is the cathode plate positive or negative?

A: Negative side
The cathode is the electrode where electricity is given out or flows out. The anode is usually the positive side. A cathode is a negative side.

Q: What is the cathode plate made up of?

A: Cathode active materials (CAM) are typically composed of metal oxides. The most common cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries include lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP), and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNiMnCoO2 or NMC).

Q: Does cathode attract negative?

A: An electrolytic cell. The battery pumps electrons away from the anode (making it positive) and into the cathode (making it negative). The positive anode attracts anions toward it, while the negative cathode attracts cations toward it.

Q: What is the difference between plate and anode?

A: A plate, usually called anode in Britain, is a type of electrode that forms part of a vacuum tube. It is usually made of sheet metal, connected to a wire which passes through the glass envelope of the tube to a terminal in the base of the tube, where it is connected to the external circuit.
