Titanium Cathode

High-Corrosion-Resistance Titanium Permanent Cathode for Demanding Electrolysis
The titanium cathode is a high-performance permanent cathode designed for demanding copper electrowinning environments where stainless steel cathodes have insufficient corrosion resistance. Made from pure titanium or titanium alloy, it offers exceptional corrosion resistance in acidic, high-chloride and other aggressive electrolyte conditions.
Compared with stainless steel cathodes, titanium cathodes have longer service life, better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and lower metal contamination risk. They are the preferred choice for special electrolysis processes with high corrosion requirements and high-purity production.
Material Properties
Titanium (Grade 1 / Grade 2) is widely used as cathode substrate material due to its unique combination of properties:
- Excellent corrosion resistance: Forms a stable, self-healing oxide film in acidic environments, withstanding a wide range of corrosive conditions
- High strength-to-weight ratio: Strong but lightweight, reducing handling weight compared with steel cathodes of similar strength
- Low metal contamination: Low dissolution rate means minimal titanium pickup in the electrolyte and cathode product
- Long service life: Can last 10–15 years or more under proper operating conditions
Structural Design
A titanium cathode assembly includes:
- Titanium Plate Body Pure titanium (Grade 1 or Grade 2) plate with precision-polished deposition surface.
- Copper-Titanium Composite Conductive Beam Copper core for high conductivity, bonded with titanium cladding for corrosion resistance. The joint between beam and plate is designed for low contact resistance and long-term reliability.
- Hanging Lugs Titanium-clad contact lugs at both ends of the beam, shaped to match your cell busbar configuration.
- Edge Insulation High-performance polymer insulation strips (PVDF or PFA recommended for aggressive conditions) bonded to edges.

Performance Advantages
- Exceptional Corrosion Resistance
Titanium forms a stable passive oxide film in acidic environments, providing excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion. It performs well even in electrolytes with higher chloride content where stainless steel would degrade quickly. - Long Service Life, Low Replacement Frequency
Under proper operating conditions, titanium cathodes can last 10–15 years or more - about twice the life of 2205 duplex steel cathodes. This reduces long-term replacement costs and production downtime for cathode change-outs. - Low Product Contamination Risk
Very low dissolution rate means minimal titanium ions enter the electrolyte, reducing contamination risk for high-purity cathode copper products. This is especially important for applications requiring very high metal purity. - Lightweight, High Strength
Titanium has high strength but low density (about 60% of steel), so titanium cathodes are lighter than equivalent steel cathodes. This reduces crane load and makes manual handling easier when necessary. - Wide Operating Range
Can operate stably over a wider range of current densities and electrolyte compositions than stainless steel, providing more flexibility for process adjustments.
When to Choose Titanium Cathodes
Titanium cathodes are recommended in the following situations:
- Your electrolyte has high chloride ion content that causes rapid corrosion of stainless steel
- You operate at high current densities (above 350–400 A/m²)
- You require very high-purity cathode copper with minimal impurity pickup
- You want to minimize long-term replacement and maintenance costs
- Your process involves special electrolyte additives or conditions that are aggressive to steel
Application Scenarios
- Copper electrowinning with high-chloride electrolyte
- High-purity copper production requiring minimal contamination
- Special electrowinning processes with aggressive additives
- Plants operating at high current densities
- Operations where long service life and low maintenance are prioritized over lowest initial cost
- Other non-ferrous metal electrowinning with corrosive electrolytes
