Copper Electrorefining: The Path to Pure Copper
In the global copper industry, electrorefining is the final step that transforms blister copper (typically 99.0–99.5% Cu) into high-purity LME Grade A cathode copper (99.99%).
At PRS (Sichuan Precision Technology Co., Ltd.), we design and deliver advanced copper electrorefining (ER) systems that ensure stable operation, low energy consumption, and superior product quality.
1. Process Overview
The copper electrorefining process takes place in an electrolytic cell where impure anodes and stainless steel cathode blanks are alternately placed in an electrolyte solution containing CuSO₄ and H₂SO₄.
When an electric current passes through the solution:
- Copper from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte.
- Pure copper deposits onto the cathode surface.
- Impurities such as gold, silver, and selenium either fall to the bottom (forming anode slime) or remain dissolved.
Typical Electrolyte Composition:
Cu²⁺: 35–45 g/L
H₂SO₄: 150–200 g/L
Temperature: 55–65°C
Current Density: 250–320 A/m²
2. Key Equipment Supplied by PRS
PRS provides complete turnkey electrorefining systems, including:
Polymer concrete electrolytic cells with high corrosion resistance
Stainless steel cathode plates / permanent cathode blanks
Lead alloy anodes or titanium-based anodes
Cell busbars, intercell busbars, and shorting frames

Each system is customized according to the client's production scale, whether it's 2,000 TPA or 100,000 TPA.

3. PRS Engineering Advantage
Our design philosophy emphasizes:
Uniform Current Distribution: Optimized busbar and anode spacing design ensures even copper deposition.
Energy Efficiency: Precision-engineered electrical connections reduce voltage drop and power consumption.
Automation Integration: Robotic stripping systems improve productivity and reduce labor intensity.
Material Durability: All components resist corrosion and mechanical stress under acidic conditions.
4. From Design to Commissioning
PRS delivers complete EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) solutions:
3D process design and simulation
Equipment manufacturing and factory testing
On-site installation and commissioning
Technical training and operation support
Project timeline: From initial design to final commissioning - typically within 4–8 months.
