Safety Purpose
In electrowinning and electrorefining operations, cells are electrically connected in series. When maintenance is needed on a specific cell, the short circuit frame provides a safe, controlled way to:
- Bypass the cell: Redirect current around the cell being worked on
- De-energize safely: Allow personnel to work on the cell without electrical hazard
- Maintain production: Keep the rest of the tankhouse line in operation
- Prevent arc damage: Provide a controlled, low-resistance current path
How It Works
- Positioning: The short circuit frame is placed across the cell busbars at both ends of the cell to be bypassed
- Contact: The frame makes solid electrical contact with the anode and cathode busbars
- Current Transfer: Electrical current is redirected through the frame, bypassing the cell
- Safe Access: With current safely bypassed, personnel can work on the cell
- Removal: After work is complete, the frame is removed and the cell returns to service
