Copper is one of the most important metals in the global economy, essential to everything from power infrastructure to electronics manufacturing. As the world's largest copper consumer, China relies heavily on imported copper resources to meet its demand. According to USGS data, global copper reserves stood at 890 million tons at the end of 2022 - of which China accounts for only about 3%. The world's major copper-rich nations include Chile, Australia, Peru, Russia, Mexico and the United States.
Naturally, copper mine production is concentrated where the resources are. Copper smelting capacity, on the other hand, tends to locate either near the ore source or close to major consumption centers, depending on what makes the most economic sense.
Below is a brief overview of where global copper mine and smelting capacity stands today, and where it's heading.

Current Global Capacity
Data from the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) shows there are currently around 840 copper mines worldwide (operating and planned), plus 165 smelters and 325 refineries.
At the end of 2022, global copper mine production capacity reached 27.395 million tons - 22.133 million tons from copper concentrate and 5.262 million tons from hydrometallurgy (SX-EW).

Regional Breakdown: Mine Capacity
Looking at the forecast data, global copper mine capacity is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of about 3.5% from 2020 to 2026 - with concentrate capacity growing faster (3.9%) than hydrometallurgy (2.1%).
By region in 2022:
- South America: Largest producer at over 10 million tons (35.1% of global capacity), led by Chile (6.57M tons) and Peru (2.92M tons)
- Asia: 5.37 million tons (18.7%), mainly in China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Mongolia
- Africa: 15.3% of global capacity, concentrated in the DRC and Zambia (combined 4.08M tons, or 92.7% of Africa's total)
- North America: 14.2%
The world's top 20 copper mines account for 9.56 million tons of capacity - about 34.9% of the global total. Chile alone has 7 of those top 20, including the world's largest open-pit mine (Escondida, 1.51M tons) and largest underground mine (El Teniente, 400,000 tons). Peru has 4 mines in the top 20.
Notably, three Chinese-invested mines rank in the global top 20: Las Bambas and Toromocho in Peru, and Kamoa-Kakula in the DRC.
Smelting Capacity
Global copper smelting capacity reached 24.703 million tons by the end of 2022. Flash and continuous smelting technologies account for the largest share at 16.17 million tons (65.5%).

Regional Breakdown: Smelting Capacity
Asia dominates global smelting capacity by a wide margin:
- Asia: 14.59 million tons (59.1% of global), concentrated in China (9.14M tons, or 37% of world total), Japan (1.87M tons), India and South Korea
- Europe: 4.207 million tons (17%), mainly Russia (1.2M tons), Poland (740K tons) and Germany (630K tons)
- South America: Chile (1.71M tons) and Peru (430K tons)
- Africa: Zambia leads with 1.11 million tons, plus 180,000 tons of blister capacity in the DRC
- North America: US, Canada and Mexico combined at 1.43 million tons
- Oceania: Australia at 550,000 tons
Future Outlook
Both mine and smelting capacity are expected to continue growing at a moderate pace over the next several years.
From 2022 to 2026, global copper mine capacity is projected to grow at a 2.8% CAGR - 3% for concentrate and 1.8% for hydrometallurgy. Smelting capacity is growing at a similar 3.1% CAGR, roughly keeping pace with mine supply.
In terms of utilization, global mine capacity ran at about 81% in 2022, while smelters operated at around 87% (though the copper concentrate-only utilization rate, excluding cold material processing, was closer to 73%).
Where New Capacity Is Coming From
New mine capacity (2022–2026): +3.18 million tons total
- Chile + Peru (South America): ~710,000 tons combined
- Russia (Europe): ~500,000 tons
- China + Iran + Mongolia + Uzbekistan (Asia): ~940,000 tons combined
- DRC (Africa): ~580,000 tons
These four regions account for roughly 86% of all new mine capacity
New smelting capacity (2022–2026): +3.19 million tons total
- Asia dominates: China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Uzbekistan adding ~2.87 million tons (90% of global new capacity)
- Europe: Serbia adding ~100,000 tons
- Most other regions remain flat or see only minor increases
Key Takeaway
Global copper mine and smelting capacity are growing roughly in lockstep. The much-discussed copper concentrate shortage - and the resulting pressure on TC/RC treatment charges - reflects ongoing tightness in concentrate supply relative to expanding smelting capacity, especially in Asia.
That said, many of the planned new smelting projects in China and Iran face uncertainty around whether they'll actually come online on schedule. For both mining and smelting companies, long-term industry health depends not just on technology, scale and environmental compliance - but on maintaining a reasonable profit balance across the entire supply chain.
For hydrometallurgy (SX-EW) project operators and equipment suppliers, the steady growth of leaching capacity - particularly in Africa and South America - continues to create opportunities for plant construction, equipment upgrades and process optimization.
