HDPE Insulating Board

HDPE Insulating Board – Electrode Positioning & Electrical Isolation for Electrolytic Cells
The Insulating Board is a non-conductive component used in electrolytic cell systems to isolate electrical connections, prevent current leakage, and avoid short circuits between anodes, cathodes, and the cell structure.
PRS insulating boards are manufactured from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) – not vinyl ester resin concrete. The board features multiple rows of precision-machined positioning grooves on its upper surface, designed to securely hold anode and cathode rods (or busbars) at the correct spacing and alignment.
Key advantages: High dielectric strength, excellent acid/alkali resistance, lightweight, durable, and easy to install.

Material Comparison – Why HDPE?
|
Material |
Common Name |
Typical Applications |
Key Features |
|
HDPE |
High-Density Polyethylene |
First choice for copper electrowinning |
Acid & alkali resistant; excellent corrosion resistance in high-concentration H₂SO₄; long service life; high toughness; lightweight; most reliable for copper electrolysis |
|
PP |
Polypropylene |
Zinc EW / partial copper tanks |
Higher hardness than HDPE; translucent (white/semi-transparent); better heat tolerance but lower toughness |
|
FRP/GRP |
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic |
Retrofit / low-cost projects |
Composite material (yellow/black matte); prone to aging, brittleness, delamination – not recommended for long-term high-performance use. |
|
PVC |
Polyvinyl Chloride |
Low-cost alternative |
Rigid, white; poor chemical resistance and durability compared to HDPE |
Conclusion: HDPE is the preferred material for copper electrowinning insulating boards due to its proven corrosion resistance, toughness, and long service life.
Advantages of PRS HDPE Insulating Board
- Precise electrode positioning – Grooves machined to ±0.5 mm tolerance
- Superior electrical insulation – HDPE is naturally non-conductive
- Excellent chemical resistance – Unaffected by sulfuric acid and typical electrolytes
- High toughness – Will not crack or deform under normal cell loads
- Lightweight – Easy to handle and install
- Long service life – >10 years in copper electrowinning service
- Cost-effective – Lower initial cost and minimal maintenance
Packaging & Transportation
- Packaging: Each board wrapped in protective film, stacked in wooden crates.
- Combined shipment: PRS can consolidate insulating boards with other components – electrowinning cells, anode/cathode plates, busbars, FRP grating, piping – to maximize container space and reduce shipping costs.
